In 2019, the DFAT with its partners the GSMA supported Seedstars to extend its worldwide competition - Seedstars World - to Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Samoa.
What is Seedstars?
Seedstars World is the world's largest start-up competition in emerging markets. Each year the Seedstars team visits over 65 countries and hold more than 100 events in order to find the best early stage startups.
The Seedstars World events in Port Moresby, Apia and Suva events ran for three days and included a two-day bootcamp and a full day pitching competition. The bootcamp provided local startups with in-depth training sessions from the Seedstars investment team and mentoring from partners including the GSMA with an idea to not only support the entrepreneurs themselves but to develop the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The winning start-ups were:
- Smart Pei - Samoa
- Traseable - Fiji
- Niunet - PNG
The winners received an all-expenses paid trip to the three day 2019 Seedstars Asia Summit in Cambodia to participate in one-on-one mentoring and curated investor meetings in addition to receiving extensive visibility and networking opportunities.
In Cambodia, the Pacific startups were recognised as being some of the most promising startups in the Asia-Pacific and awarded an expenses-paid trip to the Seedstars global Summit in Switzerland in early 2020.
While the Pacific is home to early-stage ecosystems, we believe that entrepreneurs can have a strong impact if empowered and connected both on a regional and global level.
